directing APPRENTICESHIP

 

Directing Apprentices are expected to:

  • Collaborate with Mentor to set specific, directing-related learning goals (e.g., scheduling/rehearsal breakdown, create blocking, communicate notes with actors etc.).
  • Attend production meetings to help build professional relationships and understand the collaborative nature of theatrical work.
  • Establish a schedule that supports the apprentice in achieving their minimum 50 required hours, with attention to pre-production, rehearsal, and tech week
  • Arrange 1–2 check-in meetings to evaluate progress, discuss challenges, and adjust goals if necessary.

Directing Apprenticeship hours (minimum 50) can include:

  • One-on-one planning and design meetings with the Director
  • Production team meetings
  • Attending rehearsals to observe process/ taking notes with/for the Director
  • One-on-one meetings with actors who have missed rehearsal to teach blocking
  • Participation in designer runs, dress rehearsals and tech week to gain insight into the Director’s position during the tech process
