emerging design/tech residency
Program Goals
The Emerging Design/Tech Season Residency with Second Generation Theatre is intended to help develop well rounded backstage practitioners, focusing not only on how to execute excellent production concepts, but how to realize theatrical designs in a practical sense.
Apprentices can expect to:
- Gain hands-on experience
- Make industry connections
- Learn from experienced professionals
- Build skills in multiple areas of technical theatre including set design, lighting design, sounds design, and scenic construction.
- Leave the program with four professional resume credits
Apprentices must be able to:
- Take direction from design and technical staff
- Communicate in a timely manner with designers and production management
- For each of 4 shows, attend the first read, production meetings, load-in/tech week and strike
- Demonstrate a very basic understanding of at least two areas of technical theatre (Ex: lighting design, set design, sound design,scenic art, set building).
- Work 30-40 hours (scheduled with the Mentor/Designer) outside of the outlined dates above for each show
Compensation
Apprentices participating in the Emerging Design Tech. Residency are paid $1,500 per production for a total of $6,000 for the season. If the apprentice enters with or obtains skills needed by SGT’s typical overhire, additional hours may be available at the rate of $17.5/hour.
Availability
- First rehearsal, production meeting dates, load in/tech through opening and strike.

Availability will be discussed with Mentor to ensure that expectations can be met within Apprentice’s schedule. Most work will be done in the evenings.
Eligibility
- Residencies are geared towards recent college graduates.
- Residency slots may be available for current junior and senior college students; internship credits may apply.
